The rarity of the family name Selover derives in part from its French origins of Seloivre in Calais. When a descendent relocated to Holland the Dutch, simplified, for their ease, the name to Selover. The family of cart wrights eventually had a son, Isaac Selover (b 1642) and he voyaged to New York planting the name in the New World. It was Asher Selover (b 1796) who brought the name to Ohio from New York in 1841 initially buying land in Strongsville a town some 24 km southwest of Cleveland. His wife, Ruth (nà ©e Baker, b 1810) was the daughter of a Revolutionary War veteran of Valley Forge who survived the hunger, little clothing and lacerated feet. From wise purchase Asher became a prominent land owner and in the end one of the leading lawyers of Cleveland. Their s was a good size family of eight that made the surname Selover less rare. One of Asher s and Ruth s sons, Theodore Asher (b 1845) enlisted in the Ohio Infantry in 1862 on turning 17, due to the Civil War. On his discharge, the following year, he sought a job as a railway clerk similar to his brother Cornelius to provide additional income for their mother, Ruth, as Asher had died in 1866, one year after the Civil War. Before Theodore married Mary Ann (nà ©e Lee, b 1845) in 1872, Theodore personal wealth was $1000 (about $20,000 in todays dollars), a decent amount for a 27 year old.
